The Revival of the Flat Earth

Flat Earth. Really?!?

One year ago nobody was talking about this, and now there are many websites and YouTube channels devoted to the Flat Earth model.

In my opinion the Flat Earth information is being released according to somebody's agenda.

I believe it's no coincidence that the "Flat Earth" card is played now, so close to the end.

(From the Illuminati card game, 1981)

What's going on?

Before we start

I have seen many heated arguments about the revival of the Flat Earth, so let's all keep an open mind, and just look at what is being presented by those behind it.

Whether you like it or not, the Flat Earth concept is here to stay, so you might as well hear about it from me.

Also remember that satan wishes to divide us, so we need to remain vigilant, and keep our eyes on the big picture.

Flat Earth

The Flat Earth model should look familiar to the globe model, e.g. the same continents, etc.

- By Trekky0623 / Wikimedia Commons

Note however that instead of Antarctica as a continent, "Antarctica" is now a giant "ice wall" surrounding the Flat Earth.

- By Martin St-Amant / Wikimedia Commons / CC BY-SA 3.0

And a good thing too, otherwise we would fall off.

The Flat Earth model has a dome over it, and the sun, moon, and the stars are all inside the dome. Try and see the sun, moon, and stars as "lights" rather than physical bodies you can land on, etc.

Check out this YouTube video for a rough idea of how that works:

The moon is not pictured, but it follows a similar path to that of the sun.

It's a bit like a snow globe...

The curvature of the Earth is what will decide which model is the correct one.

Here is an example of being able to see things that should not be visible if we're on a globe (taken in New Zealand).

The Chicago skyline pictures have become a hot point for debate. At a certain distance, how much of the buildings should be visible?

The picture below is taken at a distance of 37 miles (60 km). How much of the buildings should we be able to see?

- © Sam Cornwell

Recently people have started using lasers (taken at sea level, over a certain distance). This is something you can do yourself as well.

The expected drop-off (when on a globe) can be calculated using the following formula:

Drop-Off (in inches) = 8 (in inches) x Distance (in miles) ^ 2

So for a distance of 4 miles, the drop-off will be "8 x 4^2 = 8 * 16 = 128 inches = 10.6 feet".

Note that that does not allow for observer height. For calculations on that, please check out this curvature calculator.

An observer at sea level should then not be able to see the laser at sea level, but experiments have shown that they can see it.

These kind of curvature experiments can't be covered up with a lie. You either see the object, or you don't.

The explanation science has offered is that of refraction, atmospheric lensing, looming, and mirages, etc.

There are many videos and images showing a lack of curvature, but there are also an equal number of videos and images saying it's all perfectly normal.

Of course some put forth a very good argument that the formula is no good at all for measuring the Earth's curvature.

So, to summarize:

h = r - r cos (s / 2r)
h = height
r = radius of the earth
s = arc length

For example:

r = 20902000 (radius of the Earth in feet)
s = 4 * 5280 (4 miles in feet)
h = r - r cos (s / 2r) = 2.7 feet

This is completely different than from the 10.6 feet from the other formula.

We've all been taught that ships "sink" once they reach the horizon.

But the YouTube video below shows that when the ship starts to sink below the horizon, it can be seen again by zooming into it with a powerful camera.

I'm not sure what that proves, but it's certainly interesting.

Some people say that the Bible is a "Flat Earth book". I would disagree. The Bible is about salvation, and not about the Flat Earth. There's only Genesis, and a handful of verses that speak directly about creation. Nevertheless, many verses have been used to "prove" the Flat Earth.

Here is a brief overview of the most common ones.

Be Not Moved

Fear before him, all the Earth: the world also shall be stable, that it be not moved.
- Chronicles 16:30 (KJV)

The Bible says that the Earth shall not be moved. Well, there goes the spinning globe theory!

According to the globe model the Earth is spinning at 1,000 mph, we're moving around the sun at 67,000 mph, and our solar system moves around the galaxy at 490,000 mph. It's amazing our atmosphere hasn't been blown of the planet completely with all of that going on.

However, I think it's important to realize that there are not just two models, e.g. a spinning globe, and a stationary Flat Earth. There are also in-betweens, e.g. a stationary sphere, etc.

The "not moving" verse does not mean the Earth is flat. At best it says that the Earth is "not moving".

Ball, Circle, and Sphere

In Hebrew there are different words which can be used to describe the Earth, e.g. ball, circle, and sphere.

Isaiah knew these words quite well.

Here he uses the word "ball" (which is more like a toy):

He will surely violently turn and toss thee like a ball into a large country: there shalt thou die, and there the chariots of thy glory shall be the shame of thy lord's house.
- Isaiah 22:18 (KJV)

But when he describes the Earth he uses the word "circle" (a 2D mathematical concept):

It is he that sitteth upon the circle of the earth, and the inhabitants thereof are as grasshoppers; that stretcheth out the heavens as a curtain, and spreadeth them out as a tent to dwell in.
- Isaiah 40:22 (KJV)

I don't think Isaiah was necessarily describing the shape of the Earth though. It feels more like a metaphor.

Keep in mind that even a globe looked at from space will appear as a circle.

Even a Flat Earth has depth to it, and is not technically a circle either. In fact, it's more like a disc, or a cylinder.

Every Eye Shall See Him

The verse below says "and every eye shall see him". How's that possible on a globe?

Behold, he cometh with clouds; and every eye shall see him, and they also which pierced him: and all kindreds of the earth shall wail because of him. Even so, Amen.
- Revelation 1:7 (KJV)

Maybe "the coming with clouds" takes place over a period of time. Then everybody would have the chance to see Jesus.

A Flat Earth wouldn't necessarily solve this problem either. There are still limits as to how far we can actually see.

Daniel's Vision

Daniel, in vision, saw a tree that reached to heaven, which was also visible to the ends of the Earth.

The tree grew, and was strong, and the height thereof reached unto heaven, and the sight thereof to the end of all the earth.
- Daniel 4:11 (KJV)

Note that this was in vision where things are often symbolic, e.g John the apostle saw a "woman on a scarlet beast". These things are clearly symbolic.

Even on a Flat Earth it would be impossible for everybody to see the tree, in the same way that not everybody is able to see Mt Everest. Simply too far away.

Also, when it says "the sight thereof to the end of all the earth", it is good to remember that in the Bible the Earth refers to dry land. So the "end of all the earth" does not refer to the edges of a Flat Earth, it simply refers to the edges of all dry land.

And God called the dry land Earth; and the gathering together of the waters called he Seas: and God saw that it was good.
- Genesis 1:10 (KJV)

All the Kingdoms of the World

The devil showed Jesus all the kingdoms of the world on a high mountain. Can that be done on a globe?

Again, the devil taketh him up into an exceeding high mountain, and sheweth him all the kingdoms of the world, and the glory of them; and saith unto him, All these things will I give thee, if thou wilt fall down and worship me. Then saith Jesus unto him, Get thee hence, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve.
- Matthew 4:8-10 (KJV)

Even on a high mountain it would not be possible to see all the kingdoms of the world on a Flat Earth. Again, there are limitations as to how far we can see.

I think satan would have shown the kingdoms in the vicinity of that mountain. He would have said something like: "There's Egypt, and there's Babylon. Bow down before me and they're yours". Either way, Jesus clearly wanted to have nothing to do with them.

Some argue that the Bible speaks of a dome (firmament).

And God said, Let there be a firmament in the midst of the waters, and let it divide the waters from the waters. And God made the firmament, and divided the waters which were under the firmament from the waters which were above the firmament: and it was so. And God called the firmament Heaven. And the evening and the morning were the second day.
- Genesis 1:6-8 (KJV)

That's really unfortunate because firmament really just means "expanse of [something]". Where the "something" is determined from the context, e.g. "firmament of heaven" meaning "sky", or "outer space", etc.

God clearly calls the firmament "Heaven" in verse 8, and we know that heaven means sky, or atmosphere. Not a dome in other words.

Isn't the sky strong though?

Hast thou with him spread out the sky, which is strong, and as a molten looking glass?
- Job 37:18 (KJV)

Most people don't realize, but it's actually Elihu (one of Job's "friends") saying this, and not God.

I think it's just some kind of metaphor, because God often refers to the heavens as being "beaten out", or "stretched out".

I have made the earth, and created man upon it: I, even my hands, have stretched out the heavens, and all their host have I commanded.
- Isaiah 45:12 (KJV)

Some Bible versions have translated raqia as "dome", but that is not correct.

It's best to stick with the King James Bible when it comes down to interpretations like this.

And yes, the sky is strong, because it carries the birds.

There are plenty more verses, but I think you get the idea.

To sum it all up, the Bible doesn't outright say the Earth is flat.

Flat Earth Model

The globe model has only been in place for the last 500 years or so. Before that people simply assumed the Earth was flat.

Here is a popular Flat Earth model:

- Logos Bible Software

However, just because there is such a model does not mean it's correct.

Oh come on, NASA would never lie to us!!

Wouldn't they?

You see, if the Flat Earth model is correct, then we didn't go to the Moon, we didn't go to Mars, and the International Space Station is probably a joke too!

Is it really possible to deceive the whole world like this?

Flight Routes

There are some serious problems with the Flat Earth model though that need to be resolved. For example, on a Flat Earth map you can fly from Auckland, New Zealand to Santiago, Argentina, but it will take significantly longer than if you follow the great circle route (most direct path on a globe).

The Flat Earth route is roughly 25,000 km (need at least one stopover to refuel), and the Globe Earth route is roughly 11,000 km (direct flight).

Make no mistake. The routes, headings, and countries they fly over are completely different.

Here's the Flat Earth "straight line" route:

Here's the globe "great circle" route:

- Source

You can book a flight from Auckland to Santiago which will take approximately 11-12 hours. That's not possible on a Flat Earth. Some people have suggested that this flight therefore simply doesn't exist, but that's not true either. If you go to the Qantas website, you can see for yourselves.

You can even track these flights using FlightAware.

- Source

Thousands of people have been on these flights, and there are many pictures of Antarctica on Pinterest, as well as many videos of Antarctica on YouTube.

This is a major problem for the Flat Earth model.

Also, the Flat Earth map does not work at all. Here's a great video made by a Qantas commercial pilot with more than 30 years experience flying across the world.

Another big issue is the existence of 24-hour sunlight on Antarctica during summer. That's simply not possible on a Flat Earth.

Yet here it is:

So the great dragon was cast out, that serpent of old, called the Devil and Satan, who deceives the whole world; he was cast to the earth, and his angels were cast out with him.
- Revelation 12:9 (KJV)

It is true that satan has deceived the whole world, but this level of deception is just mind boggling.

Could satan really have hidden the evidence of God by twisting the very nature of the world we live in?

In all honesty, I don't know how far the deception goes. Maybe some parts of the Flat Earth model are actually true (geocentric, NASA, etc).

Whatever the case may be, I do know that the revival of the Flat Earth is happening for a reason.

Don't let it divide us.

Ellen White

Ellen White didn't really want to get into this type of discussion.

It is better to pray and humble the soul before God and let the world, round or flat, be just as God has made it.
- Ellen White, Manuscript Releases, vol. 21, p. 413

Let those who are presenting theories as to whether the earth is round or flat, leave this question, for God has not given it to them to solve, and earnestly inquire, "What shall I do that I may have everlasting life?" Let them heed the answer, "Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy strength, and with all thy mind; and thy neighbor as thyself."
- Ellen White, Manuscript Releases, vol. 21, p.419/420

I do believe however that Ellen White believed she was on a globe.

Go to all nations, He bade them. Go to the farthest part of the habitable globe, but know that My presence will be there.
- Ellen White, The Desire of Ages, p. 822

Her writings are inspired, so that kind of settles the "round or flat" issue.

Further research

Here are some more websites that debunk the Flat Earth model.

There are plenty more videos, but these should get you started.

The Flat Earth model is well put together, but at the end of the day I'm not buying it.

The arguments Flat Earthers use like "NASA lies about space, etc" don't necessarily prove that the Earth is flat. It just means NASA lies. So when you strip all that away there's actually not as much proof as you would expect.

If you were to successfully attach the Flat Earth concept to the Bible, then all you would need to do is destroy the Flat Earth theory, and it will also destroy/discredit the Bible in the process. Sounds more like something satan would come up with, and we need to be very wary of that.

I have also noticed that some Flat Earthers say that the Flat Earth model reveals the Creator, but to be perfectly honest, I believe that the sphere model reveals a way more powerful Creator than the Flat Earth model does. A sphere is something God would think of, whereas a snow globe is more something man would think of.

The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament sheweth his handywork.
- Psalms 19:1 (KJV)

- By Michael J. Bennett / Wikimedia Commons / CC BY-SA 3.0

My understanding of the world we live in has increased dramatically because of the Flat Earth movement, so I'm grateful for that at least.

But personally I believe we're on a sphere.
